Lake District Bridal Makeup: Lauren’s Beautiful Wedding at Melmerby Hall
As a Lake District bridal makeup artist, I’m lucky enough to work at some beautiful wedding venues across Cumbria, but Lauren’s wedding at Melmerby Hall near Penrith was particularly special.
There are certain weddings that have a timeless quality to them, the kind of wedding that feels romantic, elegant and completely personal. Lauren’s day had all of that and more.
From the beautiful local church ceremony to the stunning family wedding dress she wore, this was a wedding day filled with family, tradition, romance and beautiful surroundings.
And as someone who has always been a huge lover of traditional weddings, beautiful gowns and historic venues, I absolutely loved being part of it.
Getting Ready at Melmerby Hall
I arrived at Melmerby Hall on a beautiful sunny morning, and it really was the perfect day for a wedding.
Lauren had planned everything beautifully with the help of Annabel, her wedding planner, who did a wonderful job of making sure everything was organised and running smoothly behind the scenes.
I was there to do the makeup for Lauren, her mum and her three bridesmaids, and we spent the morning getting ready together in a lovely private room at the Hall.
It was cosy and tucked away from the rest of the house, which made it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the morning before the excitement of the ceremony began.
Many of the wedding guests had travelled down a couple of days earlier and were staying onsite, so there was already a lovely atmosphere around the Hall.
I always think the wedding morning is such a special part of the day. Everything is still to come, and there is that lovely mixture of excitement, anticipation and just a tiny bit of nervousness!
There is also something wonderful about being surrounded by your closest friends and family while you get ready.
Lauren’s Beautiful Family Wedding Dress
And then there was the dress.
Lauren chose to wear her mother's wedding dress, which had been passed down through the family.
And wow, what a beautiful dress it was.
There is something incredibly special about a wedding dress that already has a history. It isn't simply a beautiful gown; it carries memories and family stories with it.
I’m very much a lover of traditional weddings, and details like this are exactly what I adore.
A beautiful old venue.
A traditional church ceremony.
A family wedding dress.
Generations of family coming together.
It felt incredibly romantic.
And when Lauren put the dress on, she looked absolutely stunning.
The dress suited her perfectly, and knowing that her mum had worn it before her made the moment even more special.
Natural Bridal Makeup for Lauren and Her Bridesmaids
For Lauren's makeup, we created a natural and timeless bridal makeup look, enhancing her features without making her feel overly made up.
I always think the best bridal makeup should still look like you, just a beautifully polished version of yourself.
Lauren wanted a soft, elegant look that would photograph beautifully while still feeling natural in person.
We used individual lashes to softly enhance the eyes, along with beautiful skin and subtle definition to complete the look.
Her mum and three bridesmaids also chose natural bridal makeup, but I tailored each look individually to suit their own features, colouring and personal style.
I don't believe bridesmaids should all necessarily look identical. I love creating a cohesive look while still making sure that each person feels comfortable and beautiful in their own makeup.

While I worked on the makeup, Katrina from Bowness Bridal was busy creating the girls' hairstyles.
Katrina did a fantastic job, as always, and it was lovely working alongside her again.
Having a great team of trusted wedding suppliers makes such a difference on the morning of a wedding. Everyone knows what they're doing, and it means the bride and bridal party can relax and enjoy themselves rather than worrying about timings.

The photography was by Red on Blonde, a lovely husband-and-wife photography team based in Matlock, Derbyshire.
I always think choosing your wedding photographer is such an important decision. Once the wedding day is over, your photographs are what allow you to relive all those little moments.
Lauren's wedding was full of wonderful details and moments to capture — from her beautiful family wedding dress to the excitement of getting ready with her mum and bridesmaids.
Having photographers who understand how to capture the atmosphere of a wedding as well as the big moments makes such a difference.
A Lake District Wedding Filled With Tradition
What I particularly loved about Lauren's wedding was how personal it felt.
It wasn't about following every wedding trend. Instead, it was about bringing together the things that were important to Lauren and her family.
A beautiful family venue.
A traditional church ceremony.
Her mother's wedding dress.
Her mum and bridesmaids getting ready with her.
Family and friends travelling to celebrate together.
And a beautiful sunny day in Cumbria.
These are the things that make a wedding memorable.
As a Lake District bridal makeup artist, I get to see lots of different weddings, and every couple has their own style and personality. But I have to admit, I have a real soft spot for traditional weddings.
Give me a beautiful country house, a church ceremony, a gorgeous wedding gown and a bride getting ready surrounded by the people she loves, and I'm very happy!
